The Motuora Restoration Society (MRS) is a voluntary community group set up to undertake the restoration of the island. It is an Incorporated Society and is recognized by the Charities Commission and the IRD as a Charitable Organisation. It has a membership of around 100 and is headed by an elected committee. Motuora is part of the Department of Conservation estate, and from 2004 until 2016 MRS was responsible for both the restoration project and the day-to-day running of the island. Currently MRS continues to manage the on-going restoration of Motuora. All expenses for these activities are borne by MRS. The Society maintains the nursery, funds weed control work (equipment and contractors) and seabird translocations (equipment and operating costs) on the island. The funding that enables this work comes from organizations that distribute funds for charitable purposes, from business sponsorship and from donations made by individuals.

Come and be part of the restoration of this unique island in the Hauraki Gulf (between Kawau Island and Whangaparaoa).
The majority of the island has now been planted and the pioneer forest is flourishing so, apart from some infill planting and the planting of canopy trees, forest planting is no longer our main focus. Consequently we no longer organise large planting trips to Motuora.
However there is still much to be done. Work is on-going on seed gathering, nursery work, tree inter-planting, track maintenance and weeding as well as monitoring of translocated sea birds, forest birds, lizards and insects. All these are tasks that depend on the physical labour of members and volunteers. We also need people who are willing to learn the skills associated with these tasks so please join us on one of these trips and let us know if you want to participate and learn these skills.
